The Vyttila- Kakkanad ferry service is a relief from the traffic congestion on the roads for the public commuters between Vyttila and Kakkanad mainly consisting of Infopark employees, staff and students of Rajagiri educational institute and commuters to the civil station and other commercial establishments in Kakkanad. The Kakkanad boat jetty is the final destination of the ferry service operating from Vyttila, with four other stops in between, namely, Arattukadava jetty, Eroor jetty, Thuthiyoor jetty and Irumpanam jetty.

As part of the  Kochi Public Transport Day (KPTD) organised by the  Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR), Kochi,  on June 1, 2018, the District Collector K. Mohammed Y. Safirulla had taken the ferry from Vyttila boat jetty to Kakkanad boat jetty  to understand the gaps in the ferry service in the area. It was identified that the lack of last mile connectivity from the Kakkanad boat jetty to the nearest bus stop on the Seaport- Airport road was the root cause of the public’s reluctance to utilize the ferry service for daily commute. CPPR has submitted a report recommending proposals to tackle this issue, to the District Administration and the proposals put forth in the report are listed below;

  1. Proposal- 1
  • Shifting the existing Kakkanad boat jetty to a proximal location with respect to the Seaport- Airport Road
  • Provision of a new boat jetty near Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (KINFRA)
  1. Proposal- 2
  • Provision of share autos with a passenger capacity of 3 and an approximate fare of Rs. 10 to 12 per person
  • Provision of mini buses from the existing Kakkanad boat jetty, with a higher passenger capacity and nominal fares
