Dr Joe Thomas Karackattu, director of ‘Guli’s Children’ interacting with the audience
Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) organised a screening of the film ‘Guli’s Children’ at its office on September 20, 2017. The film directed by Dr Joe Thomas Karackattu, an Assistant Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras, successfully locates the descendants of a family that moved from Calicut (now Kozhikode) in Kerala to China some 700 years ago. An interaction with the filmmaker followed the screening.
Calicut, also known as Guli in Chinese, was an important node in the overall links between China and Kerala. ‘Guli’s Children’ brings out the cultural–historical ties, the physical artefacts and the traces of human genealogy that survive between Kerala and China to this day.
About the maker
Dr Karackattu has a keen interest in Sino–India relations and is selected as a ‘China India Scholar Leader’ for 2017–19 by the India China Institute at the New School, New York. He was ‘Fox Fellow’ (2008–09) at the Yale University and the recipient of the first ‘Centenary Visiting Fellowship’ at SOAS, University of London in 2013.
