ABOUT THE TOPIC


Ahead of the 18th BRICS Summit, the Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR), Kochi, in collaboration with Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), Kottayam, organised a roundtable on “The 18th BRICS Summit: India’s Priorities and the Future of the Global South” on 8 September 2026.

The discussion examined BRICS’s evolving role, India’s priorities during its Chairship, internal cohesion, Global South cooperation, and India’s strategic positioning amid its wider global partnerships. Key themes included UNSC reform, India-China relations, strategic autonomy, local-currency trade, digital payments, AI governance, critical minerals, and counter-terrorism cooperation.

The roundtable featured Prof. Dr G. Gopakumar and Mr Manoj P. V., and was moderated by Dr Jojin V. John. Bringing together academicians, researchers, students and policy experts, the discussion generated insights and recommendations for an issue brief on India’s BRICS priorities and the future of the Global South. The event report captures the key deliberations, perspectives and recommendations emerging from the discussion.
