India is neither a party to the 1951 Refugee Convention nor an ASEAN country. Yet, it has been criticised by the international community and media for its lack of condemnation of Myanmar atrocities and neglect of the protection of refugee rights of Rohingyas in India. Although India does not have a refugee policy, the international community has looked up to India for its ‘humanitarian’ and value-based approach. This article attempts to understand the nuances of the Rohingya crisis and the friction surrounding it for India through the lens of regional diplomacy, territorial border and Hindutva politics.
