The verdict resulted from a public interest lawsuit by a group of environmental NGOs, led by the Netherlands-based Friends of the Earth (Milieudefensie). The decision is historic and will set a precedent for climate change litigation worldwide since it is the first time a multinational corporation was found liable for deficient climate policy.
