D Dhanuraj, Chairman of the Centre for Public Policy Research, shared his insights on India’s sodium-ion battery ecosystem in an article published by Dhanam Online. He discussed the challenges associated with developing the technology and highlighted policy measures that could strengthen domestic manufacturing.

According to Dhanuraj, India’s dependence on China for hard carbon—a key material used in sodium-ion batteries—remains a major challenge. He suggested promoting indigenous production of hard carbon from agricultural residues and coconut shells, while advocating for a technology-neutral Production Linked Incentive (PLI) framework that supports domestic energy storage manufacturing irrespective of the battery technology adopted.
