China’s economic model (authoritarian capitalism or “capitalism with Chinese characteristics”) has been cast as a geopolitical challenge to the modern democratic capitalism, especially after the global financial crisis. Yet, Alexander T. J. Lennon, editor-in-chief of The Washington Quarterly, argues that the “China model” and the challenge it presents has been misunderstood. The following questions seek to be answered. What are the challenges and risks presented by the “China model,” to the Anglo-American model as well as India’s, and what are the potential terms of a nascent geopolitical competition among capitalist systems?
Alexander T.J. Lennon is the editor-in-chief of Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)’s flagship journal, The Washington Quarterly, focusing on global strategic trends and their policy implications. Dr. Lennon is also a research fellow in the international security program at CSIS, where he focuses on the grand strategy and foreign and security policies of the contemporary major powers – particularly the United States, China, India, Europe, and Japan- and on nuclear proliferation prevention strategy. He has been an adjunct professor at Georgetown University since 2007.
