Centre for Strategic Studies

The CPPR Centre for Strategic Studies (CSS) aims to identify the strategic significance of India from a global perspective, and the role it plays in world affairs. The shifts in foreign policy with an emphasis on hard and soft power linkages will be the thrust areas of the centre. The centre will probe the implications of increasing global inter-dependence and foreign relations on India.

CSS envisages to come up with recommendations to ameliorate the discourse on strategic issues to enhance India’s global presence. This will be done with a qualitative analysis of past, present and potential strategies for developing relevant policy documents.

Hormis Tharakan

Hormis Tharakan, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Kerala cadre (1968 batch), was Chief of the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), India's external intelligence agency, from February 1, 2005 to January 31, 2007. He is the former Director General of the Kerala Police. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor to Department of Geopolitics, Manipal University.

Dr W Lawrence S Prabhakar

Dr W Lawrence S Prabhakar is currently Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Madras Christian College, Chennai, India. Dr Prabhakar was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy Degree for his thesis “Strategic Thought in India Since 1971” from the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, University of Madras, Chennai, India. He specialises in academic and policy research on the following areas: Nuclear Missile issues in Southern Asia; Maritime Security issues in the Indian Ocean and the Asia-Pacific Region, Grand Strategy of China and India-United States Strategic Relations; Grand Strategy of India.
