INTRODUCTION

Budget 2023 will be the last full-year budget for the current government ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha general assembly elections. The biggest challenge faced by the government right now is how to fasten the pace of the country’s economic growth rate. Last year’s budget was announced during a time when India was coming out of the Covid-19 pandemic and the focus was on recovery. The implications of the geopolitical tensions caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, like the increased oil prices and global recessionary fears, will impact the upcoming budget. The Indian rupee depreciated over 11 percent against the dollar in 2022 and became the worst drubbing among Asian currencies. Consequently, the forthcoming budget is likely to focus on growth while it is caught in a cleft stick to tame the inflation pressure.

CPPR throughout the years was active in budget discussions. We have rich literature on budget analysis including published articles and video discussions. CPPR is active in pre and post-budget discussions in popular news channels both in Kerala and national media.

This year’s budget discussion is intended to analyse the budget 2023 presented by the government and how far the government could propel growth in the country in different sectors of the economy.
