The Centre for Public Policy Research, in collaboration with YMCA Ernakulam, organised a public discussion on the “Overview of Union Budget 2026” on 6 February at 6:00 PM at the YMCA International Guest House, Ernakulam. The session brought together finance professionals, retired bureaucrats, and policy enthusiasts to deliberate on the fiscal priorities and policy direction set out in the Union Budget 2026.

The event was inaugurated by Shri V. Roy Jose, IRS, Commissioner of Income Tax and Director of Income Tax (Intelligence and Criminal Investigation), Kochi, who delivered the keynote address. In his remarks, he situated the Budget within the broader macroeconomic context and described it as reflecting a continuity approach, characterised by the absence of major headline announcements but sustained emphasis on stability and reform. He also highlighted the evolution of a trust-based tax administration framework aimed at strengthening compliance while facilitating growth.

The budget analysis was presented by Adv. Anu Maria Francis, Senior Associate, and Ms Banisha Begum Sheikh, Senior Associate at CPPR. The speakers offered a structured examination of the Budget, drawing attention to key allocations, sectoral priorities, and reform measures. Their analysis covered developments in taxation, infrastructure, social sector expenditure, and broader economic strategy, situating the Budget within ongoing debates on fiscal consolidation, employment generation, and inclusive development.

The interactive session that followed saw active participation from the audience, with questions focusing on implementation challenges, revenue mobilisation strategies, and the implications of the Budget for different sectors of the economy.

The event formed part of CPPR’s continued engagement in fostering informed public dialogue on fiscal policy and governance, with the objective of advancing evidence-based discourse on national economic priorities.
