The Public Policy Research course is a unique offering to the certificate course environment. Bringing together cutting edge policy frameworks, tools and tricks in the broad fields of Governance, Data collection, Policy Design, Policy Evaluation and Communication This course introduces participants to the political significance and societal consequences of policy and policymaking. Policies help accelerate the essential political processes and socio-economic development of the citizens of a nation, which makes researching them tricky. The course will allow participants to learn to think critically and in a 360 degree manner, including all stakeholders party to public policy when learning how to undertake the research. 

 

This curriculum is carefully designed to help participants not only to develop skills and knowledge to understand policy and methodology but to also evaluate public policy. The course will incorporate an interactive and engaging teaching methodology. The Public Policy Course will include Video lectures, case studies, live examples, virtual sessions and exciting assignments at the end with feedback systems in place. Public Policy Research can be looked at theoretically but when entering the work foray, the need for practical tools, lessons and tricks are crucial to thrive in this growing sector along with the various theories, logics and frameworks. 

 

Course Objectives :

  1. To introduce participants to policy research and its main function areas- understanding public policy, methodology, designing and evaluation.
  2. The course will build participants’ critical thinking, problem solving and decision making capabilities in the public policy sphere
  3. To prepare participants in conducting policy research of any subject area with diverse requirements. 
  4. To equip participants in looking at socio-economic issues both quantitatively and qualitatively. 

 

Post course completion, learners will have: 

  1. The ability to develop impactful and sustainable policy solutions to address issues in the socio-economic sphere. 
  2. Insights from instructors working actively in public policy as academicians and researchers. 
  3. An understanding of research methods which will help systematically study a particular issue, policy or initiative in order to get reliable and valid results. 
  4. The capability to collect, evaluate and analyse qualitative and quantitative data,  learn how it interacts with policies and how policy research can be presented to various stakeholders. 
  5. The skill to analyse evidence based policy with an aim to help participants improve effectiveness of existing policies in their current or future policy related work. 
  6. The skill to design, monitor and evaluate a policy to ensure its impactfulness and effectiveness.

 Mr Madhu Sivaraman

Madhu Sivaraman is currently working as consultant to the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, DPIIT, Delhi . He is a Research Scholar at CPPR and had earlier worked as the Centre Director (Research and Projects). He has been associated with CPPR for more than 10 years in a multi-disciplinary role engaging in projects spanning areas of transport, education, livelihood, dispute resolution, regulations and governance. With a background in law, Madhu was instrumental in developing policy strategies for local and state governments and supporting key initiatives of CPPR. He was instrumental in setting up ADR Centre, the dispute resolution centre of CPPR. He pursued a fully-funded master’s degree programme in Comparative Public Policy from the University of Edinburgh, UK under the Chevening FCO UK scholarship. He received the Edinburgh Award for Public Engagement for his work on digital education policies in Malawi, Africa while working for Turing Trust, UK. He is a sports enthusiast and yoga practitioner, who also likes to explore new places.

 Dr. Reetika Syal

Dr Reetika Syal is a Senior Fellow (Governance and Education) at CPPR. She is currently working as an independent consultant with Janaagraha. She was Senior Officer, Research at CPPR from October 2021 to June 2022. She has a Ph.D in Political Science from Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, and was Assistant Professor at JAIN (Deemed-to-be) University, Bangalore, for more than 8 years, before joining CPPR. She has also worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow at Wageningen University & Research, The Netherlands and IIT- Delhi in 2018-19, on a project on Civil Society Advocacy with her research focusing on State-Civil Society Relations in Disaster Management in India. She is a part of the Lokniti Network, Delhi, and has been a part of various elections and democracy-related studies, along with being a resource person for Lokniti’s Annual Summer School on Quantitative Data Analysis for more than a decade. Dr. Syal has extensive experience in conducting qualitative and quantitative studies including large sample opinion surveys in India on Elections and Democracy, Governance, Elementary and Higher Education, and has presented papers at many international and national conferences, along with publishing in journals and edited books. She was the International Consultant for Nepal Governance Survey, a study by the Nepal Planning Commission in 2017.

 

 Meenuka Mathew

Meenuka Mathew is a Senior Research Fellow at the Jindal School of Government & Public Policy (JSGP). She has a Bachelor’s degree in Humanities from Aquinas University, Colombo, Sri Lanka and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU), India. Her research focuses on refugee economies, transnational migrants, Public Health, and Policy Design Evaluation and Communication. She has extensively travelled and worked for International Non-Governmental organisations based in the Philippines, France, and Uganda. In Sri Lanka, she has worked in areas of programme design & evaluation. Her professional experience is mainly in programme design, teaching & research. She is currently the assistant editor of Jindal Journal of Public Policy. At JSGP, she works on research on Gulf migrants of India, Refugee economies in South Asia and COVID-19 & the Indian middle class. She is currently the Asst. Editor of Jindal Journal of Public Policy. She also coordinates the NIHR Health Financing Fragmentation study in India in collaboration with Imperial College, London and JGU. In 2019, She co-founded Policy Talks which focuses on Public Policy Education for school students.
