KOCHI: Experts called for a sustainable and practical way for fund mobilization in the aftermath of the August deluge that ravaged the state.

The demand was put forth at the two-day international round table ‘Vikasarth’ on ‘Rebuilding Kerala economy: Time for a paradigm shift?’ that concluded in Kochi on Saturday.

Former state chief secretary Paul Antony said Kerala needs to get realistic about its economic priorities. Instead of creating new government jobs, the state can foster an ecosystem to generate more jobs in private sector.

Kerala’s local governance machinery needs empowerment to move beyond regulation, to create and sustain industries and jobs.

Organized by Centre for Public Policy Research, Kochi, in collaboration with the Institute for New Economic Thinking (INET), a New York-based non-profit organization, the event saw participation of 70 people, including students, academicians, entrepreneurs and government officials.

“Kerala’s welfare allocations and gross state domestic product per capita have been rising, so has the economic inequality. With high literacy rates and health outcomes compared to other states, Kerala also has a high rate of unemployment and growing debt trajectory,” said CPPR Chairman D Dhanuraj.
