Kochi: Meera Sanyal, who recently shocked the banking world by stepping down as country head of the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) to pursue social and political causes, called for the active participation of educated Indians in the political process of the country.
Talking to a small gathering here on Friday, on governance, Sanyal, the daughter of the late Vice Admiral G. Hiranandani, a gallantry award winner said the educated middle class was making a lot of noise about poor governance but at the same time keeping away from politics.
“They should realize that there is a political space and if they are not ready to occupy that space, someone else will do. There is no point in complaining about bad politicians by keeping away from the political process.”
Meera Sanyal who unsuccessfully contested the South Mumbai Lok Sabha constituency as an Independent against Milind Deora in 2009, said that she would be in the fray in 2014 as well. She, however, did not disclose whether she would be an Independent or would join a political party.
Sanyal, who travelled widely across the country to have a first-hand knowledge of issues at the grassroots level, argued for better decentralization of power to have local solutions for local problems. She also insisted on unleashing the force of local-level entrepreneurship through small businesses to create wealth, rather than pumping money into mega welfare schemes.
She identified the absence of potable water, food scarcity caused by farmers abandoning agriculture, lack of energy security and inefficient delivery of services are major issues concerning the people and said that local solutions could be possible in all these areas.
