Centre for Public Policy Research (CPPR) conducted its third discussion forum on the Shops and Establishments Act at the Chamber of Commerce in Thrissur. The event succeeded in ensuring the active participation of the members and office holders of the chamber. The trading community presented their concerns and suggestions like availing themselves of the benefits of the shops and establishments welfare fund board, if shops and establishments with less than ten employees do not come under the purview of the Act. All of the participants agreed that multiplicity of laws made compliance difficult and envisaged a scenario, where they did not feel burdened in complying with the provisions of law. On employing women in night shifts, though a few of them expressed their willingness, they gave mixed responses about providing transportation facilities for women. On the whole, the trading community welcomed the Act as progressive, while pointing out a few issues that need to be addressed.
