Semester at Sea is a multiple country study abroad program founded in 1963 open to students of all majors emphasizing comparative academic examination, hands-on field experiences, and meaningful engagement in the global community managed by the Institute for Shipboard Education in Charlottesville, Virginia. A wide variety of coursework from 20-25 disciplines is integrated with relevant field studies in up to a dozen countries, allowing for a comparative study abroad experience that is truly global. Students from 250-300 colleges in the United States and the world participate on Semester at Sea each term. Semester at Sea equips students with the global understanding necessary to become prepared future leaders and global citizens. Throughout the history of the program nearly 55,000 undergraduate students from more than 1500 colleges and universities have participated in Semester at sea.

Semester at Sea is coming to Kochi and will be participating an Academic Program organized by Centre for Public Policy Research on Democratisation and Modernisation In India on March 11th at Senate Hotel ,Ernakulam from 10.30 am-1.30pm. Tao Xie, Professor and Assistant Dean, School of English and International Studies of Beijing Foreign Studies University will be leading the group to CPPR office  at Kochi.

Welcome and Introductory remarks will be given by Prof. K C Abraham, Academic Director CPPR and key note Address by Dr. C.R. Pramod Assistant Professor Department of Political Science, Sree Kerala Varma college, Thrissur. There will be a Media Interaction followed by key note address. This is the third time that CPPR is hosting Semester at Sea students which is an annual affair. Last time around 80 students and staff visited CPPR to attend the seminar on Social Justice, Sustainable development and Democracy in India.

Profile of Dr C.R Pramod, Key note speaker 

Dr Pramod completed his M.Phil and Ph.D in Chinese Studies from Centre for East Asian Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. The Ph.D is on the nature of inter linkages between state power and social mobilization in contemporary China. His research publications on FalunGong and State power; Spectacle, state and the market forces with reference to Beijing Olympics pursue a political sociology framework which analyses the multiple linkages between state and social structures. The postdoctoral field research conducted in Taiwan focused on the political process sequencing the institutionalization of human rights. The current research initiated on second-tier cities in China also has an interdisciplinary theoretical focus.

After completing Ph.D, he was offering courses on Human Rights and on Chinese State and Society for the postgraduate and M.Phil students for four years at Mahatma Gandhi University, School of International Relations and Politics, Kerala. The courses include “Theories of Human Rights” and “Human Rights in International Relations”. Also completed a post-doctoral research in Taiwan during 2008-2009 on the theme “Process Sequencing the Institutionalization of Human Rights in Taiwan”, fellowship provided by Taiwan Foundation for Democracy, Ministry of External Affairs, ROC, Taiwan.

Later at Mahatma Gandhi University, Dr.Pramod initiated a postdoctoral research on the nature of politics, society, and economy in the second-tier cities in China. Title: “Second-tier Cities in China: Comprehending the Sub-provincial Attributes for the Socio-political and Economic Transformation in PRC”.

Currently as Assistant Professor since 2010, he is teaching Post-graduate and graduate students at the Department of Political Science, Sree Kerala Varma College, Thrissur, Kerala.  Dr.Pramod is offering courses on “Introduction to Political Sociology”, and “Theories of International Relations”.
