Ongoing Projects
Cochin is known as Queen of the Arabian Sea. It is a fast developing commercial and tourist destination. But the city has its own problems – traffic jams, garbage strewn over the place, open drains, potholes, narrow roads and so on. This project endeavors to bring about a consensus between all concerned stakeholders, an eventual umbrella organization, which encompasses contemporary concerns of all organizations, networks with them (Private-Public Partnership and otherwise), and accelerates the process of urbanization by signing a MoU with the government for fulfilling our goals.
'Reinventing Cochin' considers how Cochin, with its growing populace and metro culture can be taken to Global standards for metropolitan cities in various aspects like transportation, town planning, Urban Governance etc. This project focuses on all urbanization reforms capable of transforming Cochin from just another tourist attraction to a fully-fledged, commercial hotspot.
The project commenced on August 2008 with a pedestrian audit of the Kaloor -Palarivattom road of Cochin to bring to light the plight of the pedestrians while trying to walk on the footpaths of that particular stretch of road.

Reinventing Cochin Cycle Rally 2009
Reinventing Cochin, one of the leading initiatives of CPPR working on areas of urban research, development and reforms, in pursuance of the same, sought to organize a campaign unlike any other - a Cycle Rally, to highlight the many problems commonly faced by cities globally such as the lack of green open spaces, the cluster and mayhem of city life, and the pollution the engulfs it all. 5th of December 2009, the date earmarked for the Rally, falling in with the United Nations Climate Change Conference Week held at Copenhagen, and the World Pollution Prevention Day was no accident; rather, such a coincidence was sought as a way to make a powerful statement in favor of the environment. The Rally aimed to revive the luster of greenery and the power of easy mobility that Kochi is slowly, but surely losing.

Access Audit This project aims at setting up an international standard that has to be maintained in public places to make walking easier for the disabled in India. The study has found the lack of infrastructure for the disabled in hospitals and parks. However, studies have shown that outside India, every plan includes a ramp that slopes downwards to make walking easier for the disabled as well. In India, plans however fail to include this issue. There are International standards set for the distance of ramps and the slope to be maintained. We aim to bring India to an International platform where International standards can be set up for the disabled. The ramp, the doors, corridors, lift, steps, toilet etc are areas where we need to make a change.
Pedestrian Audit
A Pedestrian Audit is a species of the genus known as a Road Safety Audit to estimate the safety needs of the roads. It's more than just a plain analysis. It seeks to ensure adherence to road safety rules and construction regulations, be a forum to showcase the opinions of all stakeholders, let authorities have a say and yet see how far one can hold them accountable in a non-confrontational manner.
Our Team has been conducting pedestrian audits on the major roads of the Cochin in order to examine the anomalies and dysfunctional pavements which are more of a menace and danger to the pedestrians. It succeeded in garnering public and media attention and generated a good response from the authorities too. CPPR now plans to come out with an audit of the city's roads.
The Centre has conducted pedestrian audits around the South Ernakulam Area and M G Road and plans to submit a report to the concerned authorities in January and give recommendations
