Aravind Minocha , expert arbitrator and Advocate, Supreme Court of India will be the main speaker The session will be from 5 p.m to 6.30 p.m on 28th January at Chamber Hall, Mattanchery.
Commercial Arbitration in India is witnessing a transition stage owing to demands from various quarters to reform the system. With the business leaders weighing heavily on courts and optimistic about alternate systems, the Arbitration fraternity needs to reinvent themselves by helping businesses to grow. It’s a fact that arbitration often end up in courts, especially when government which is the largest litigant is a party to the transactions. The Supreme Court of India recently delivered a judgment explaining how “time-consuming and disproportionately expensive” is arbitration is in this country. With Singapore and Dubai favoured over India as a destination for Arbitration sittings, the government’s vision of making India as an Arbitration Hub remains a far cry. The solution lies in structuring Arbitration in India by developing a strong institutional arbitration mechanism which is given the mandate to recognize, train and monitor arbitrators and arbitral sittings in India. A system of practice based on timelines and rating mechanism shall go a long way in bringing confidence towards Indian Arbitration.
Revisiting Commercial Arbitration requires a look into the commercial transactions entered into by companies in India. The importance of Arbitration clauses/agreements, the procedural steps for initiating arbitration, matters related to arbitral awards, challenging arbitral decisions etc needs to be understood by the business institutions in India. For a state like Kerala which is fast emerging as an investment destination, we need to have an equipped system of dispute resolution. Arbitration is vital tool to ease doing business. With complexities of the transaction, subject experts can help in reducing conflicts and aid business environment. ADR Centre is the Dispute Resolution arm of CIVITAS Legal Solutions. URBAN GOVERNANCE
Urban Research
This wing dwells into the importance for urban research as more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas. Over 90 percent of urban growth is taking place in the developing world. Over 1 billion people live in slums worldwide. Aproximately 360 million people live in the low elevation coastal zone in urban areas. These increasing issues relating to traffic, transport and infrastructural set up in urban areas has led to a paradigm shift in the way we move forward. Urbanization is now considered a key element in promoting economic growth, if well managed. CPPR has taken up this initiative with the focus to help the corporation to find solutions to the urban problems in Kochi, recommend policy changes and to make sure that the policies are implemented on time.
